Vintage Italia presents a nostalgic musical stroll through the golden age of Italian popular song…

Italy has long been one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, and no wonder, given its abundance of history, art, cuisine, picturesque landscapes, enchanting cities and romantic ambiance. The charms of Italy extend to its music, and on March 24th, Putumayo presents two collections that capture the spirit of this alluring country in song

With Vintage Italia, Putumayo digs deep into the vaults of Italian music to unearth some of their favorite songs by iconic singers of the 1950s and early 1960s, as well as newer recordings by artists who continue to find inspiration in the music that served as the backdrop for an era sometimes called La Dolce Vita (The Sweet Life) after the 1960 film by Federico Fellini captured worldwide attention.

The collection features legends of Italian song such as Nicola Arigliano, Fred Buscaglione, Jula de Palma, Flo Sandon’s, Teddy Reno and others whose popularity in the 1950s and 60s extended far beyond the borders of Italy. Their music embodies the postwar optimism and carefree spirit of a period when American jazz was as irresistible to Italian teenagers as pizza pie was to New Yorkers.

Vintage Italia also includes work by more current artists who continue to be inspired by this golden era of Italian popular song. Contemporary Italian singer-songwriters Emanuele Tozzi and Gianmaria Testa appear alongside America’s Pink Martini, Canada’s Marco Calliari and Austria’s Quadro Nuevo, who reflect the wide and long-lasting influence of this period. As with every Putumayo collection, there are extensive liner notes that provide fascinating stories behind the artists and songs, along with a tantalizing recipe for a traditional sgroppino Italian cocktail.
